Description
Under the general supervision of the School Administrator or a higher-level officer, the School Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and other authorized users of the aquatic facilities during aquatic programs, swim classes, and open swim sessions. Monitors pool activities and the deck area, enforces established safety rules and regulations, prevents accidents and hazardous conditions, responds to incidents and emergencies throughout the facility, maintains emergency readiness, and assists in maintaining the pool and deck areas in a safe, clean, secure, and orderly condition.
Work is reviewed through periodic inspections of pool facility cleanliness and the promptness
and effectiveness with which emergency situations are handled.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervises students and other authorized users of the swimming pool, maintains constant surveillance of the water and deck areas, enforces pool safety rules and school policies, and promotes safe, orderly aquatic activities.
• Recognizes and responds immediately to emergencies, rescues individuals in distress, and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as necessary.
• Inspects the pool area, locker rooms, equipment, and surrounding facilities to identify hazards, ensure lifesaving and first aid equipment is in ready condition, and report unsafe or malfunctioning conditions.
• Assists the Swimming Instructor and other instructors with aquatic activities, swim classes, physical education, swim units, after-school programs, and scheduled events.
• Prepares incident and accident reports accurately and promptly and receives complaints or concerns from school administrators and parents, referring or recommending corrective action as appropriate.
• Assists with opening, closing, cleanliness, and general upkeep of the aquatic facility, including the pool deck and surrounding areas.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques, water rescue procedures, and aquatic
safety practices.

Knowledge of first aid, CPR, AED, and other emergency response procedures.

Skill in swimming and water rescue techniques.

Ability to monitor swimmers continuously, recognize signs of distress, and respond rapidly andappropriately to emergencies.

Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and others contacted in the course of work.

Ability to maintain physical stamina, agility, alertness, and keen perception required for
lifeguard duties.

Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and act decisively under pressure.

Ability to inspect pool areas and equipment, identify hazards, enforce safety regulations fairly and consistently, and maintain records and routine reports.

FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Work is supervised by a higher-level officer who assigns work, establishes priorities, and
provides general instructions regarding pool operations, aquatic programs, safety procedures, and emergency response expectations. The employee performs routine duties independently in accordance with established procedures and lifeguarding standards and is expected to exercise sound judgment in monitoring activities and responding to developing situations. Unusual incidents, serious injuries, unsafe conditions, or matters requiring administrative action are referred to the supervisor for guidance or decision. Work is reviewed through observation, inspections, reports, and the effectiveness with which pool safety and emergency situations are handled.

FACTOR 3- GUIDELINES
Guidelines include established pool safety rules, school and departmental policies and
procedures, Red Cross lifeguarding and water safety standards, first aid, CPR, and AED
protocols, equipment instructions, and applicable safety regulations. These guidelines are
generally well established and apply to most assignments; however, the employee must use
judgment in recognizing hazards, responding to emergencies, and applying safety procedures to varying pool conditions and student activities.

FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY
Work involves routine and recurring lifeguarding and pool safety responsibilities that require
continuous observation, rapid assessment of conditions, and prompt action in actual or potential emergencies. The employee monitors swimmers, enforces rules, identifies hazards, supports aquatic programs, and exercises sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations. Non-routine situations, such as multi-victim emergencies, student conflicts, or equipment failures, require the employee to assess conditions quickly, adapt procedures, and coordinate with supervisors and emergency services as needed.

FACTOR 5- SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of the work is to ensure the safe operation of school aquatic activities and to protect the health and safety of students, staff, and other authorized pool users. The work affects accident prevention, emergency readiness, compliance with safety procedures, and the orderly conduct of swimming and aquatic programs. Effective performance promotes a safe learning environment, reduces risk, supports the school’s physical education, and successful operation of school-based aquatic program activities. Failure to perform duties adequately could result in serious injury or loss of life.

FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts are supervisors, teachers, instructors, students, school administrators, parents,
maintenance personnel, emergency responders, and facility maintenance staff, and others
contacted in the course of work.

FACTOR 7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Contacts are made to exchange information; explain and enforce pool safety rules; assist with aquatic activities, instruction, and supervision; respond to complaints or concerns; report conditions, incidents, and operational matters; coordinate responses to medical or safety emergencies; and provide information regarding student participation and safety.

FACTOR 8- PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires considerable physical exertion, stamina, agility, and coordination. This involves prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, swimming, lifting, and pulling, as well as the ability to rescue swimmers in distress and remove persons from the water when necessary. The employee must maintain the physical readiness required to perform lifesaving duties, administer emergency aid, and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in and around swimming pool facilities and surrounding deck areas that may be noisy, humid, and regularly exposed to outdoor weather, varying temperatures, pool chemicals, wet and slippery surfaces, and the risks associated with water-related activities and emergency response situations. The work environment requires constant alertness and adherence to established safety precautions and procedures. Protective equipment, such as sunscreen and appropriate footwear, should be used as applicable. The position also involves potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other hazardous conditions requiring strict adherence to established safety protocols

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (or equivalent nationally recognized certification).
• Current CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuers.
• Current First Aid certification.
• Demonstrates proficiency in swimming and water rescue techniques.
• Successful completion of a background check in accordance with school district policy.

Necessary Special Qualifications

• Must maintain all required certifications as current and valid throughout the period of
• employment; lapse of any required certification shall constitute grounds for immediate removal from duty.
• Experience working with school-age children in an aquatic or educational setting is strongly preferred.
• Possession of a valid Virgin Islands Driver’s License.
