St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix each have their own economies, communities and lifestyles. If you’re considering working in the U.S. Virgin Islands, here’s what you should know.

Working in St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the commercial and tourism hub of the USVI. Charlotte Amalie, one of the Caribbean’s best-known cruise ports, supports employment in hospitality, restaurants, retail, transportation and other tourism-related businesses.

Tourism continues to be a major economic driver throughout the territory, and St. Thomas receives the largest share of USVI air arrivals.

St. Thomas may be particularly attractive to job seekers who want access to a larger concentration of businesses and a busier environment. The island is also home to Cyril E. King Airport, government offices, healthcare providers, schools and a range of professional services.

St. Thomas may be right for you if: you prefer a more active environment and want access to a broad range of employers.

Working in St. John

St. John offers a noticeably different experience. Smaller and less developed than St. Thomas or St. Croix, the island’s economy is closely connected to tourism and hospitality.

Jobs can be found with hotels, villas, restaurants, shops, charter companies and businesses serving visitors and residents. Because St. John has no airport, travel to and from the island generally involves a ferry or boat connection through St. Thomas.

For some workers, the smaller community and slower pace are exactly the attraction.

St. John may be right for you if: you value a small-island atmosphere and are interested in hospitality, tourism or service-oriented work.

Working in St. Croix

St. Croix is the largest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands by land area and offers an economy that extends beyond its tourism sector.

Job seekers can explore opportunities in hospitality, government, healthcare, education, construction, retail and professional services. Tourism remains important, and continued investment is creating additional opportunities, including new hospitality development.

St. Croix’s larger geographic footprint and distinct communities of Christiansted and Frederiksted also create a different day-to-day experience from St. Thomas and St. John.

St. Croix may be right for you if: you want a larger island, a less tourism-centered lifestyle, and employment options across several industries.
